Kamalakar Karlapalem joined IIIT, Hyderabad faculty in December 2000, and heads the Data Science and Analytics Center, and Agents and Applied Robotics Group.

He is an applied computer scientist with broad research interests: from conceptual modeling, workflow systems to distributed database systems and performance, from core clustering and classification algorithms in data mining to information extraction from actionable texts, from high dimensional intensive data visualization to visual query exploration, from multi-agent systems based simulation to multi-robotic solutions, and recently, he started AI for society. He has graduated eight Ph.D. and over fifty Masters by Research students.

He with his students has participated in various academic challenges, and competitions like RoboCup, TAC SCM, VAST, and CLEF, and have secured top three positions in them.

His teaching interest range from introductoy courses - computer programming, databases, to core courses in database systems, and operating systems, and elective and advanced courses in data mining/analytics and multi-agent systems.

He is an alumnus of Indian Statistical Institute (M.Stat), IIT, Kharagpur (M.Tech) and Georgia Tech (Ph.D., 1992) and was a faculty member in the computer science department at HKUST (1992-2000), before joining IIIT Hyderabad.

Ritesh Tiwari (1979-2009)
DBLP Page

Ritesh Tiwari joined me as PhD student in 2004. Rtiesh and I were working on two important problems dealing with insider acttacks and information security assurance. In November, 2007 he was diagonized with leukemia. Ritesh fought a long battle with tremendous courage against the dreaded disease until the last moment before he lost on October 4th 2009.

In 2006, Ritesh was selected as Microsoft PhD Student Fellow. In July, 2007, he secured ‘Best Student Paper Award’ in IEEE Services Computing Conference.

We remember Ritesh as a pleasant, humble, ever accommodating, and gentle person, and one who generously helps everybody. He had fantastic work ethic and was a researcher with great promise. We will always miss him!
